Pilots Dominate Opening Matchup with Xavier to Kickoff Conference Play [1]
On February 20, the defending national champions looked the part again with a dominant 18-0 run rule victory over the Xavier Gold Rush.
David Hankins kicked the weekend off again, and followed the trend of dominance with a complete game shutout that involved three hits, one walk, and eight strikeouts. He also did it all in just 75 pitches thrown. For someone who spent his first two seasons at LSUS as a reliever, it takes some real belief for head coach Brad Neffendorf to put him in this starting role, the game one starter at that.
Neffendorf says Hankins is a guy who gets better the more he throws. He also has the stuff to be a starter with a fastball that consistently comes out around 90-91 mph with about a foot in run across the plate. His slider complements it with similar, slower movements. Neffendorf also says Hankins has implemented a changeup into his mix. For a guy like Hankins who has been at LSUS for three years, garnering lots of experience and innings, Neffendorf calls it a “no-brainer”. “If [Hankins] keeps throwing like this, we gotta keep rolling him out there”.
Offensively, 14 batters stepped to the plate. 12 found at least one way on base. Makana Olaso, Carlos Sanchez, Spencer Sullivan, and Que Walton all recorded multiple hits, with Walton and Olaso each tallying three. Walton also led the charge with five RBIs. Sanchez, Sullivan, Bronson Neave, and Rodrigo Bravo each drove in a pair of runs.
