LSUS Baseball Drains all Hope with Sweep of Royals [1]

The final weekend of January proposed the biggest threat yet to the Pilots historic win streak. The opponent was the Hope International Royals out of Fullerton, California, the fourth-ranked team in the country and 2024 national champions. This is a high stakes matchup between two of the top teams in the country. A matchup we could see again down the road in Lewiston, Idaho for the world series.

Game one did not start well for LSUS. Starter Brock Lucas had a rough first inning, giving up three runs and narrowly avoiding giving up more. The Pilots were not rattled however, as they slowly climbed back, one run at a time. By the fourth inning, the scoreboard had LSUS up 4-3. They went back and forth through the rest of the contest, seeing 3 ties and two lead changes. Makana Olaso played hero in the eighth with the game-winning RBI knock. This came after he homered the inning prior. Pilots survive, 9-8.

Games two and three were much easier going for the national champs. The Pilots put up all five of their runs in the first five innings. Evan Gant, Camden Stephens, Jacobo Gallegos, and Hunter Nichols all combined for one hit, one run, one walk, and 9 strikeouts. Final score, 5-2 Pilots. Domination of one of NAIA’s top lineups. Game 3 had LSUS by TKO. The final score was 19-8. LSUS was up 18-8 by the seventh inning. Pitching could have been better, but you can look past it when the offense put up nearly 20 runs. The top stars were Olaso and Carlos Sanchez who combined for eight hits and six RBIs.

The final game almost snapped the win streak. A pitcher’s duel between Hope’s Jake Thrift and LSUS’s Virot Siharath. Thrift went six scoreless innings and Siharath went five scoreless. A David Shackelford sacrifice fly broke the scoreless tie in the sixth. LSUS had threatened to score but could not punch through. Finally, in the bottom of the eighth, with five out remaining in the game, Sanchez, who already had eight hits and five RBIs to his name this series, showed up one more time with the game-winning two-run double. Once again, the Pilots found a way. Final score, LSUS 2-1. 6-0 on the season, 65 wins in a row.
