On Saturday, February 7, LSUS baseball once again split a doubleheader. The day began with a win over Dakota State. The box score looked like one of last season, 11-1 Pilots. It ended with a brutal 3-1 loss to Missouri Baptist.
Treyton Kolar, the Trojans starter, looked great for three innings, but LSUS found the offense in the fourth inning with seven runs scored. They used that and a fantastic start from Jacobo Gallegos as the driving forces in their win. Over four innings, Gallegos allowed no runs on three hits and struck out two. Landon Hunt recorded two hits and drove two in, while Aiden McGinnis found two hits and an RBI. Carlos Vega had himself a hit and two RBIs.
In game 2, the Spartans of Missouri Baptist came to play. Offense was sparse for both sides but struck like a dagger when it came. The Spartans went up 1-0 on Virot Siharath in the first inning. Makana Olaso tied the game with a single in the bottom of the first. A fourth inning single from Angelo Franco ended up the game–winning run. In the seventh inning, lead-off man Carlos Hidalgo landed the final blow with an RBI double to center that Carlos Sanchez could not quite grab. A moment that magnified the devastation of the injury to center fielder Dorien Jackson the weekend prior.
Again, the story was the opposing starter. Teague Robertson became the second starter of the weekend to throw a complete game masterclass against LSU-Shreveport. One run given up on two hits, seven strikeouts and a walk. If the Pilots want to get back on track, a lot needs to improve. The offense is struggling, and the pitching is inconsistent. The defense is also making too many mistakes. Do not worry though, this is baseball. Losing is normal. It is better to struggle now than when it matters in May. This weekend, another top team comes to town in Arizona Christian. An opportunity for LSUS to bounce back right here at Pilot FIeld.
